The Ranfurly Shield-winning Stags rugby team will test out their cricket skills on Friday night in a festival game at Queens Park in Invercargill.

The Southland club cricket twenty20 final was to be played on Friday night after the Otago-Auckland women's twenty20 game, which will start at 2pm.

However, with the club final transferred to tonight, the Southland Cricket Association looked at other options for a game to follow the women's fixture on Friday afternoon.

The Stags players had wanted to play cricket so the team's management and the cricket association have organised a festival game between themselves.

Some Southland cricket identities will also be available to play to help make up the numbers.

Association board member Mark Billcliff hoped getting the Stags involved in a game like this would help boost the profile of cricket.

He also said it would help promote the Otago-Auckland women's game to be played on the same day.

Along with the players, some of the Stags management team have also put their hand up to play on Friday night, including co-coach and former Hawke Cup cricket representative Simon Culhane and physio Adam Letts.

Two captains are expected to be named next week and they will select their teams for the game.
