The Ranfurly Shield is threatening to go back to Canterbury if its visitor numbers do not pick up in the New Year.
The shield has been on display at the Southland Museum in Invercargill for the past three days, but so far there has not been much activity around it.
Museum manager Gayle Ramsay said some families had come in to get photos beside the shield, but not many people knew it was there.
She hoped a bit of publicity would alert people's attention to its whereabouts and bring in more Southland supporters to keep it company.
"If people know it is here then they will have the opportunity to come and see it," Ms Ramsay said.
The museum had been "really busy" during the holiday period because poor weather had forced people inside, so many of those people already going to the museum were pleased to see the shield there, she said.
"People who are working or aren't in the sporting area don't always visit the stadium, so it is an alternative venue," Ms Ramsay said.
The shield is on display at the museum until January 7.
