Tour of Southland
Taupo's Paddy Bevin has won a sprint finish into Lumsden to claim the yellow jersey after the first stage of the Tour of Southland this afternoon.
Bevin narrowly edged out a mass sprint after a 160km stage which started in Invercargill and travelled through Western Southland.
Last year's runner-up, Bevin is also the leading under 23 rider, while Joe Chapman has taken an early lead in the King of the Mountain standings and Chris Witmitz leads the sprint ace classification.
A seven-strong breakaway which included Chapman and Witmitz managed to elude the peloton for much of the stage before being caught inside the final 10km.
The stage was raced in hot, blustery conditions after a cool start in Invercargill this morning.
Tomorrow's stage takes the riders 137km away from Invercargill before finishing on Bluff Hill.
