Stage 3 of the 2012 PowerNet Tour of Southland starts at Riverton Primary School on Princess Street Riverton at 10am and covers 48km from Riverton, via Colac Bay and Orepuki to Tuatapere. Stage 4 starts from Tuatapere at 1pm and covers 100km via Blackmount and Manapouri to Te Anau with an estimated finish of 3.30.

Paddy Bevin has claimed his second win of the 2012 Tour of Southland, winning a mass sprint up the main street of Tuatapere.

The 48km third stage from Riverton to New Zealand's sausage capital was buffeted by a strong head wind all the way along the southern coast.

''That was probably the hardest stage of the tour so far,'' Bevin said.

''The hammer finally came down in the wind and the group split big time and it was all on there for a bit. We had three guys in there and were happy to roll through.''

A group of 25 emerged to contest the sprint, with most of the race's heavy-hitters in the mix, including four-time winner Hayden Roulston and tour leader Mike Northey.

But it was Bissell Pro Cycling rider Bevin who backed up from his win in Lumsden on Monday, with Clinton Avery second and Alex Ray third.

''It just came down to the sprint finish and I had great positioning once again, the team once again dropped me off in perfect position, a little bit further back in the head wind, and I got a good run at it,'' Bevin said.

Northey, who was well supported by his Node4-Subaru team mates, will retain the yellow jersey for this afternoon's 100km stage from Tuatapere to Te Anau.

''This afternoon is certainly looking like it will be a good one and seems like the tour is well and truly underway,'' Bevin said.
