Joe Cooper, of Wellington, will wear the Tour of Southland's yellow jersey heading into the first full stage tomorrow.
Cooper's Huon Salmon-Genesys Wealth Advisers team took out this afternoon's prologue team time trial held in superb, sunny conditions around Queens Park, Invercargill, to give Cooper the first opportunity to wear yellow in tomorrow's 167km stage from Invercargill to Gore.
The Australian-based team completed the 4.2km circuit in 4:46:28, just .04sec ahead of defending champion Mike Northey's Kiwi Velo-Armstrong Prestige team.
PowerNet finished just over 2sec back in third place.
''We are all about just getting a win on the board straight away and releasing a bit of the pressure on us,'' Cooper said.
''Now we've just got the task of seeing how the race develops. We've got a few options this tour, a few cards to play, it will be interesting.''
The Tour of Southland runs through until Saturday.
