The Invercargill public library is getting a makeover to make it more family friendly.

The $400,000 project will transform the foyer to make it easier for families to use the library and to increase space.

Invercargill City Council assets manager Paul Horner said the designs were yet to be finalised but involved taking down eight metres of wall either side of the foyer area to open it up.

Horner said the project would be put out for tender this year.

The redevelopment was the last stage in the ongoing upgrade of the library.

It would also involve new paving outside and new tiles in the entrance, he said.

The tiles had been causing problems and were slippery, so it was necessary to replace them, Horner said.

Library manager Marianne Foster said she was excited about the development, which would make the area more user-oriented.

While it was not a major development, it would transform the bottom floor of the library.

"We are opening it up and making it more inviting."

No extra automatic checkouts would be added but the existing machines would be moved to a more central location, Foster said.

Teens would also be catered for with a special area.

While the construction side of the plans were in full swing, the makeover of the inside was still to be worked through, she said.

Horner said the work was budgeted for in this year's annual plan and the library had been waiting since last year to have the money allocated.

Plans for coping with the disruption during the renovations had not yet been arranged because time frames were not known, Horner said.

The council rejigged the staffing and hours of service at the library last year.

Council director of works and services Cameron McIntosh said the new regime was working well and the council had received positive feedback about the service.
