Counties Manukau Police have had success identifying offenders with new technology that shares information with the community.
Eyedentify, a cloud-based sharing website, allowed for the identification and arrest of a well-known offender who had breached his bail conditions, and helped police work with retailers to stop shoplifting.
District crime prevention manager, Inspector Richard Middleton said the arrest of the bail offender showed how technology and information-sharing was working for the police and community partners.
"Technology provides us with a platform but it is the community partnerships that allow us to undertake these preventative actions," he said.
"We are working with retailers and Eyedentify in order to prevent prolific shoplifters from operating."
Eyedentify was based on the research of Professor Gloria Laycock, the founding director of the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science at University College London, and an internationally renowned expert in crime prevention.
According to Professor Laycock, global crime rates are dropping due in part to technology and information sharing.
