2degrees lets users roam Australia
2degrees is the latest mobile operator to sweeten its offering for customers roaming in Australia.
From today, its "pay monthly" and business customers using their mobiles in Australia will pay 10 cents a minute for calls and 10c for texts to Australian and New Zealand numbers. Data will cost 10c per megabyte.
2degrees will launch data packs for all its customers, including those on prepay, this month that will let them use 300Mb of data in Australia over seven days for $10.
Chief marketing officer Malcolm Phillipps said people were still cautious about using their mobiles in Australia, often only using them when they had access to wi-fi.
"We want to change that by making roaming simple and affordable," he said.
Vodafone customers have been able since May to pay a flat daily charge of $5 to use the calling minutes, texts and data on their New Zealand mobile plans when visiting Australia, Britain, the United States, India and 13 other countries.
Despite the improvements to roaming offers, both in terms of cost and the predictability of some charges, Vodafone New Zealand consumer director Matt Williams said then that its research suggested half of New Zealanders chose not to use their phones overseas.
Telecom said its customers were using 700 per cent more data than in 2012 when travelling overseas. That year it began letting post-paid customers access the internet in Australia from their smartphones and laptops for a flat fee of $6 a day.
