Freeview penetration at 48 per cent
Half of homes will have a television connected to Freeview by Christmas, the free-to-air television transmission company estimates.
A government study suggested Freeview was now watched in 48 per cent of homes that had televisions, while 57 per cent of them had Sky Television. Sixteen per cent had both and 11 per cent had yet to make the switch to digital television, it said.
Sky TV spokeswoman Kirsty Way said it estimated its market penetration at 49.4 per cent. While not all homes have TVs, she was not able to explain the discrepancy between its own figures and those of the government survey.
Freeview general manager Sam Irvine said 80 per cent of "unconverted" viewers in Hawke's Bay and the West Coast ended up buying Freeview decoders when analogue television was phased out in the two regions in September.
"If current trends continue, half of all homes will be using Freeview by the end of this year," he said.
