Christchurch internet service provider Snap has scored top marks in a report assessing the speed performance of seven large ISPs in New Zealand.

Wellington-based testing firm TrueNet assessed the speed of file downloads during the peak traffic evening period, compared with the speed of early-morning download when internet traffic is light, in Auckland and the rest of the country for each internet service provider.

Snap's speed performance for New Zealand excluding the Auckland area was better than that of competitors Orcon, Telecom, Slingshot, TelstraClear, Vodafone and Xnet, at 97.2 per cent of its best speed.

Snap's Auckland performance was lower at 91.5 per cent. A download speed of 95 per cent or more at peak time is considered good.

The most consistent performers, with speed performance in Auckland and the rest of New Zealand better than 95 per cent, were Telecom, Orcon and Xnet.

Snap disagreed with its Auckland speed performance, saying reports from its Auckland customers contradicted those numbers.

But it was happy with its score for the rest of New Zealand, which showed the small Christchurch company could foot it with the biggest ISPs in the country, Snap retail general manager James Koers said.

Snap supplies broadband, phone and mobile services to business and residential customers throughout New Zealand. In Christchurch, its customers include the Christchurch City Council and the Canterbury District Health Board.

Snap had about 75 staff, including its call centre in Christchurch, Koers said.
