The reason Sony didn't show the exterior of the next-generation PlayStation 4 console at yesterday's presentation was because the console hasn't been completed yet, according to Sony's worldwide studio president Shuhei Yoshida.

"The console hardware isn't finished, but we thought this was a really good time to show our games," Yoshida said in a roundtable discussion with journalists.

Yoshida says he understood consumers were frustrated by the absence of the new console at the reveal, but said Sony had specific plans for its next move.

Instead, Sony revealed some of the stats of the inside of the console, as well as detailed information about the console's redesigned controller.

When asked if Sony knew what the outside of the console looked like in a finalised state, Yoshida said the company did not.

While Sony's announcement focused on the impressive specs and features of the console, there was a lot Sony wouldn't talk about at the event or during meetings with reporters.

Since the PlayStation 4 isn't due to launch until the holiday shopping season later this year, Sony still has a few months to finalise its plans.
