As Donkey Kong's resident damsel-in-distress, Pauline usually awaits rescue from hero, Mario. But one father turned the tables by hacking the classic arcade game, and creating "Donkey Kong: Pauline Edition."
At his 3-year-old daughter's request, Mike Mika designed a progressive version of the game, which features
After his daughter asked if she could play as Pauline, and save Mario, Mika explained that it wasn't possible: "I told her we couldn't in that particular Mario game [and] she seemed really bummed out by that.
This disappointment spurred dad to make the role reversal a reality, then upload the results to YouTube. Mika details how he revamped Donkey Kong on the video's page, below: "Now I'm up at midnight hacking the ROM, replacing Mario with Pauline. I'm using the 2010 NES Donkey Kong ROM. I've redrawn Mario's frames and I swapped the palettes in the ROM. I replaced the M at the top with a P for Pauline."
What's more, Mika made a "DK Pauline" patch available for those interested in playing his version, here.
