Broadband services have been cut to Telecom customers in Canterbury due to a hardware failure.
A Telecom representative said a piece of Chorus-owned equipment in Christchurch was behind the outage, which started about noon.
A Chorus technician was at the site now, she said.
"We are confident that the issue will be resolved shortly."
She apologised to affected customers for the inconvenience.
Some Telecom customers were unaffected.
Customers of other internet providers might also have network problems.
Last week, Telecom's 3G mobile data network failed in Christchurch, affecting voice and text messaging for customers in the South Island and lower North Island for about three hours.
