MOON MOMENT: Mystery surrounds the identity of this streaker who braved sub zero temperatures in a dash across Invercargill's Rugby Park at a pre-season rep game recently. The streaker later auctioned his socks on TradeMe with proceeds to go to the Winton Fire Brigade but the brigade, which is denying any knowledge of the stunt, is yet to see any funds.

Unlike other parts of the story, the mystery surrounding Invercargill's Rugby Park streaker who ran the length of the field in below freezing conditions at a pre-season game last month continues to increase in size.

A pair of socks worn by the nude pitch invader was auctioned on the Trade Me website last month with the funds supposedly going to the Winton Volunteer Fire Brigade.

When the auction closed it was being led with a bid of $50 by the Beige Brigade, the semi-formal group of cricket supporters who have repopularised the fawn and brown uniforms of the 1980s New Zealand one-day team.

However, Winton chief fire officer Ray Johnstone told The Southland Times he had no knowledge of the streaker, the auction nor any resulting cash windfall for the brigade.

"I haven't heard anything; it's news to me," Mr Johnstone said.

He confirmed he was in Wellington when the streaking incident during Southland's pre-season game against Canterbury occurred and is not considered a suspect.

"You can rule me out," he said with a laugh.

"There's been no cash put up ... there could be a bloody good fine coming up (though)."

Auctions following entertaining exploits of exposure are becoming a commonplace occurrence in New Zealand rugby.

Has rugby had a fair deal at the Halberg Awards over the years?

No. They should have won more gongs than they have.

It's been about right.

More than a fair deal. Other sports are more deserving.
