BRAND SPANKING: Southern Steel chief executive Julie Paterson with the new logo of the southern netball franchise. The team name Southern Steel and logo were revealed yesterday.

Southern netball fans now have a name to put to the merged Southland and Otago team that will play in next year's trans-Tasman ANZ Championship: Southern Steel.

"We are delighted to have a name and really happy with the name we have selected," she said.

"The (Southern TeamCo) board wanted something that was a really strong name.

"Our teams have always had a lot of grunt, a lot of strength and I guess staying power in the past – and we wanted to be able to present something that was going to represent all of that going into the future."

Southern TeamCo put the call out this year to the public to come up with potential names for the team.

However, when the overwhelming favourite of the four selected – Ice – was ruled out because of drug connotations, and others – Roar, Fusion and Seanix – were crossed off because they were either used by other sports teams or were deemed unsuitable, it was back to the drawing board.

Brand specialists Yellow Pencil, a Christchurch-based company, was called in to help and came to the rescue with the name Southern Steel, which the board unanimously agreed on.

Paterson was also pleased with the logo, which incorporated a star and the representative colours of Southland and Otago.

"(The name) could have been perceived to be a little bit tough, but the logo is designed to soften it a little bit," she said.

A star has also been named after the team to celebrate the beginning.

More details of Southern Steel, including the mascot, uniform and team were yet to come, but Paterson was pleased the franchise now had "a stick in the ground".
