Kiwi wins Ironman Wisconsin
Christchurch triathlete Gina Ferguson has produced a breakthrough victory in Ironman Wisconsin in the US today.
The 26-year-old spreadeagled a strong field to win in 9hr 37min 03sec. She broke the course record by nearly 10 minutes and beat off her nearest challenger, American Hillary Biscay by a remarkable 24 minutes.
Ferguson was third overall of all competitors out of the 3.8km swim, opened a 12 minutes lead after the 180km bike on the hilly Wisconsin course and rattled home with a 3hr 14min marathon.
This is the third win by a New Zealander in global Ironman competition this year following Kieran Doe winning Ironman Canada and Chris McDonald winning in Ironman Louisville.
