Redondo provisionally suspended for doping

Spanish rider Jose Antonio Redondo has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for the anabolic steroid methyltestosterone.

"On 9 April 2009, the UCI advised Spanish rider Jose Antonio Redondo Ramos that he is provisionally suspended," the UCI said in a statement.

"The decision to provisionally suspend Mr Redondo Ramos was made in response to a report from the WADA accredited laboratory in Barcelona indicating an Adverse Analytical Finding of methyltestosterone metabolites in a urine sample collected from him at an out of competition test on 13 March 2009."

The UCI said it was now up to the Spanish federation to decide whether they would open disciplinary proceedings against Redondo, who rides for the Andalucia-Cajasur team.

"The provisional suspension remains in force until a hearing panel convened by the Spanish Cycling Federation determines whether Mr Redondo Ramos has committed an anti-doping rule violation," the statement read.

Redondo was sacked from Astana in September 2007 for "breaking the team's (anti-doping) rules".
