FOUL BALL: Little Emily Monforto about to throw her dad's foul ball catch back during a MLB game in Philadelphia.

Dad could not believe his good luck. Steve Monforto made a great grab, catching his first foul ball after years of going to Phillies games. He fist-bumped his buddies, high-fived his 3-year-old daughter and then handed her the prize. Big mistake. Little Emily threw the ball over the railing.

Stunned by his toddler's toss this week, all Pop could do was hug her.

"I didn't want her to think she did anything wrong," Monforto said on WIP-AM radio today (NZ time).

Philly crowds are known for being a tough bunch, but everyone at Citizens Bank Park cheered - first his catch, then his cuddle.

"This was the true reflection of what Philly fans are like," Bonnie Clark, the team's vice president of communications, said.

Cameras captured the scene of Monforto reaching over the railing and snagging Jayson Werth's foul in the fifth inning against Washington.

The video was displayed at the top of the Yahoo! Web page and made the NBC national news. The entire family is scheduled to appear on the "Today" show tomorrow (NZ time).

Monforto and his daughter still went home with a baseball. A few of them, actually.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and three team employees saw what happened and each grabbed a ball and went up to the stands.

"He was very appreciative," Phillies executive Mike Stiles said.

What a nice guy - thinking of his daughter first! Lots of men would have gotten mad but this guy is one in a million!

Thank you #'s 30, 31, and 32. These sad sacks turn up in almost every comment section, and I too am incredibly tired of it. Unfortunately, pointing out what a waste of space their comment is, is like yelling at a rock to move.

On a brighter note, what an awesome uplifting story! We need more articles like this to brighten up our days. Such a positive change from articles on child abuse/murder (would the detractors in the comments rather there were more stories like that?). Thank you, Stuff.

After almost every foul, a ball ends up in the crowd. Either being hit into the crowd or a player throwing it into the crowd. And it's a messy battle amoung the fans to get the ball. I never saw a fight, but lots of snatching. So throwing the ball back would be heartbreaking for most fans.

Oh, and the Yankees suck. LET'S GO BLUE JAYS!!!

Sam #8 = you don't think a major league baseball game would play an entire game with ONE ball do you? this was a brilliant sporting moment caught on tape!

What is with all the "negative nancies"? So you dont think it is important, or worthy of being called news. Easy, don't continue reading, and don't bother posting. No one really wants to read your negative comments anyway!

I thought this was a great peice. I loved Dad's reaction, after all, that little girl was only doing what most kids would when handed a ball. Good on him for seeing the funny side. And I'm glad he got his ball in the end.....

Sigh. You people are the pits - I speak of the 'this isn't news' and 'what's the big deal' dropkicks.

It isn't hard news, no. Does every article have to be? Can't we have some light in our lives? Would you prefer every piece to be on murder and bloodshed?

And what's the big deal? It's a nice story. Other fathers would have reacted differently but this guy got it. I think it's brilliant. What a champion dad that guy is.

All you sad sacks should try smiling for once. You won't pull a muscle - I promise.

Okay I'll try to make this clear for those who constantly post rubbish like "Why is this news?" and "Why is this on the front page?"

The Internet is big. Really, really big. Bigger than your dad, bigger than your house, bigger than NZ even. It cost you nothing but time to view this story. You even made the decision to click on it to read it, then took more time to complain about reading it. You didn't pay to download this story against your will.

Look at your local newspaper, be it the Herald, the Times, the Dom, the Press, the ODT, whatever. Go to page...oh...30 or something. Full of puff pieces isn't it? So why should an electronic version of a newspaper be different?

This story is a puff piece, aka a human interest story. It's akin to saving for your dream home theatre system for years, and finally after getting it and installing it your kid comes along and waters it like Mummy waters the plants, and destroys it. And instead of getting angry, you hug the kid for doing what they thought was right. The big differences are that a new home theatre system is a phone call to your insurance company away, while there may never be another baseball (well...other than the ones the team handed over later), and the baseball increases in value because other fans will pay money for special ones while the home theatre depreciates to nothing.

Geddit? You may not understand the intricacies of baseball and the associated fandom, but many do not understand your constant need to whinge about your own bad choices.

In Baseball they use more than 1 ball unlike cricket - if you catch the ball in the stands you can keep it.

It would be a prized possession to a die-hard fan

Has rugby had a fair deal at the Halberg Awards over the years?

No. They should have won more gongs than they have.

It's been about right.

More than a fair deal. Other sports are more deserving.
