ON THE ROPES: Waikato Times reporter Jonathan Carson had Sonny Bill worried a couple of times, but there were no hard feelings after the final bell.

Many have scoffed at Sonny Bill Williams' boxing ability, but very few have stepped in the ring with him.

I, on the other hand, still have a bruise on the bridge of my nose from where he punched me.

As the critics weighed in ahead of Williams' New Zealand heavyweight title bout – dishing out disapproval from behind the safety of computer screens – I decided to take the fight to the man himself.

"I've got a proposition for you," I said to Williams' manager, Khoder Nasser, this week. "Let me spar a round with Sonny."

Unexpectedly, he agreed, and the bout was scheduled for the following night at the Hamilton boxing gym where Williams is training for his title clash against Clarence Tillman III on February 8.

I had called out one of New Zealand's biggest sporting superstars – a professional boxer, an All Black, a former NRL crusher, a man twice my size constructed of pure muscle.

Arriving at the gym I was a little worried to find an ambulance parked out front. The company's health and safety manager was taking a risk on this one and insisted a paramedic be on site.

It was my first time meeting Williams and as we shook hands – the "bro" way – I was amazed by the sheer size of him.

There was a bit of pre-fight trash talking. "You better be ready," Williams jeered. "Oh, I'm ready," I lied.

After I was kitted out in all the armour available – hand wraps, gloves, headgear and mouthguard – I was ready to rumble.

My colleagues at the Waikato Times had been tossing around ideas for a boxing moniker. The first was the Smiling Assassin – because I tend to smile a lot. A favourite was Jonny Deadline – referring to my role as a reporter. But, the one that seemed to stick was Killer Carson – a bit of an overstatement, but it had a ring to it.

It wasn't until Wednesday night that I truly realised what I had talked myself into.

I wasn't sure how Williams would react in the ring. After all, I was the reporter who wrote the story in which Sir Bob Jones claimed "he can't box" and should be fighting as an amateur. Would Williams take out all of his frustrations with the media on me?

However, I was also the reporter who wrote the column suggesting people get off his back and let him box. Would he take pity on my small and out-of-shape self? My internet use prior to the fight was a litany of Google searches for "how to box a taller fighter" and "how to beat a bigger man".

I also studied all four of his fights on YouTube.

I do boxing training as a hobby and have had a few sparring sessions with people of a similar size and ability, but I wanted to be prepared.

My strategy was to bob and weave and punch his body. It's not like I had a choice. I could barely reach his head.

Williams' defence was tight, but I managed to slip a few shots through in the first minute before he took control and threw me against the ropes.

Ad Feedback

"It's my turn now," he said as he began pop-shooting me to the face at will. One right hook gave me a bit of a buzz, and a jab right on the nose made my eyes water.

Before long I was puffing and sweating, but my mission was to land one on his chops.

Right at the end of the round I connected with a right hand to the chin and Williams dropped to the canvas.

It was a Hollywood, of course. The man had been taking it easy on me the entire round. But, if he goes on to become a champion, it will be a story to tell the grandkids.

I stayed to watch the rest of Williams' training. The man is working hard. And he can box, I have no doubt about that.

Well done Jonathan liked your opening statement there very true and good on you for attempting, ok it was a publicity stunt and he was jerking around but I say good on you I don't see the haters putting an offer to his manager to spar with SBW I sure would't but then again Muay Thai is more elite than boxing.

utterjoke   #37   11:00 pm Jan 28 2012

prob hardest fight of his life lol what a joke nz boxing has become that this guy can fight another no one for the heavyweight title lol such a joke any one who watched his terrible display, at just beating a fat overweight noone with tennis elbow, knows he cant fight to save himself. he had one punch and a terrible overhand right, through no combonations at all and his footwork was so poor he kept turning his back on his opponent! anyone who knows anything about boxing knows he is terrible, the sunny bill lickers need to learn what boxing is...

Dont watch   #36   05:56 pm Jan 28 2012

That was hard to watch

Look if SBW wants to box as a hobby then good on him, but he's got to be prepared take the criticism from people in the know.

Baza   #34   01:51 pm Jan 28 2012

Kinda seems the reporter was better than SBW's other fights LOL HONESTLY ... ... Some of the boys from my boxing club in Porirua would smash SBW in the ring but we will never get to prove it cos he will only sign up chumps willing to let a boxing unco smack them for a few grand to build SBW "brand" profile

Hey Mike #23, easy there on your criticisms! SBW had a sick family member to attend to, hence why he didn't make the post World Cup parade. Helps if you check your facts before you go mouthing off eh?! Typical Tall-Poppy bashing someone for being successful from the safety of your keyboard!

The whole gravy-train following SBW has shown just how many people there are in this country suffering from Tall-Poppy Syndrome. He is entitled to try boxing regardless of whether or not he's fighting proper professionally trained boxers or people who haven't touched a pair of boxing gloves in their lives. Should we have SBW going round to all the residences of the people criticizing him so he can criticize them for what they do? It would seem a fair deal!

I haven't got a problem with his boxing as long as it doesn't interfere with his rugby commitments. I really do think that people need to get off his back and let him get on with his sporting commitments. Also, the media need to ease up on the constant salivating and find something else to report about once in a while, as the constant speculation surrounding SBW is playing a big part in the negative perception people have about him.

Bjammin what i meant is that the reporter, albeit horribly outweighed and at a significant reach and height disadvantage, displayed the boxing basics a lot better than SBW. His head was tucked into his chest, his gloves were high, and he was moving up and down and left and right. SBW, on the other-hand, was strutting around with low gloves and minimal movement, totally reliant on his size differential to keep the little guy at bay. He will not get away with this against bigger opponents who know what they're doing, so SBW should wake up and smell what Mundine and Nasser are smoking, as they're filling his head with all sorts of grandiose delusions that will get shattered against his first decent opponent!!

Will the Black Caps bounce back from their T20 capitulation to win the ODI series against South Africa?

No. Mentally they'll be stuffed. Proteas have all the momentum.

Yes. They're good enough and they'll be extra determined now.
