Rugby reporter Andrew Saville has been named as Tony Veitch's replacement as TNVZ's One News sports anchor.

The network also said sports journalist and former Silver Fern netballer Jenny May Coffin would present the sports news on Fridays and Saturdays, and be back-up to Saville.

Sports reporter Toni Street would provide additional back-up over the next couple of months.

Veitch quit both his television and radio broadcasting jobs in July after being accused of attacking former partner Kristin Dunne-Powell in 2006.

He faces six charges of assault and one count of injuring with reckless disregard and is on bail with a pre-depositions hearing set for October 20.

Saville has been at One News for the past two years, having started his broadcasting career on radio.

He won the Sir Terry McLean Sports Journalist of the Year Award in 2006 and the top sports news broadcast award last year for his coverage of the 2007 World Cup.

TVNZ said Saville would remain One News' main All Black reporter.

Really pleased, I have admired Andrews ability as a sports reporter for some years now, he certainly deserves this chance as a major front man for TV1. Good luck Andrew.

I am happy as long as he's not another closet wife beater...

I'm pleased, Sav deserves it; he's worked hard enough to get the shot at it and has slotted in seamlessly well after Veitch. While a good journalist himself who worked hard at a job he loved, V always was a little in love with himself and it used to irk me as it showed through the cracks. I've no doubt he'll be back at some point, with any station that chooses him - but hopefully not before he's reached rockbottom and learned to reinvent himself as a mature man who has learned his lessons. For those that think he should not have stepped down from his jobs - if you are a big fish in a small pond, the very first rule you learn is never to do anything that could implicate you in your private life. He forgot that rule and paid the known price that goes with the big fish label. That's life, he'll get through it.

Worst decision ever! Won't get into the Veitch decision here, but he is a massive loss to TVNZ. We live in hope for them to change their minds.

He's a great choice, although it will be sad that Tony won't be coming back. I don't think anyone will be as good as he was. Hopefully this guy won't try and mimik Tony's style though!!

New and fresh will be good!!! And he's been doing a good job so far...

You're saying Saville brown-noses the All Blacks, so you'll stick to TV3? I have a two-word response, my friend, and that is: Hamish McKay.

You say Veitch is an arrogant, mouthy little upstart? What about yourself? If you truly believe rugby is a minor sport in this country then you're all the above -- and you can throw in unhinged for good measure.

Has rugby had a fair deal at the Halberg Awards over the years?

No. They should have won more gongs than they have.

It's been about right.

More than a fair deal. Other sports are more deserving.
