The New Zealand Rugby Union has confirmed that Tasman will participate in the 2009 Air New Zealand Cup.

NZRU General Manager Provincial Union and Community Rugby Brent Anderson said that the NZRU had been advised on Wednesday of the new funding arrangements put in place for 2009 by Tasman.

"On the basis of the undertakings made today by the Tasman Union we are pleased to be able to confirm that they will take their place in the Air New Zealand Cup next year," he said.

"It is important to acknowledge and recognise the significant effort made by the Tasman Rugby Union, its sub-union members and its sponsors, fans and community partners to get to this stage.

"The Tasman board have also indicated to us that they will continue to work hard in their community to grow the revenue base to ensure the ongoing financial viability of the Tasman Union."

Tasman was given an ultimatum last week by the New Zealand Rugby Union to balance its budget by Wednesday or be booted out of the Cup.

Tasman needed to find an additional $250,000 in five days to remain financially viable and at Monday's board meeting they decided to give it their best shot.

TRU chairman Nick Patterson said the board still had a "strong desire to remain in the Air New Zealand Cup."

He said Tasman's chances of success had improved after receiving a number of offers of assistance over the last few days.
