Former Southland Sharks basketballer Gareth Dawson, originally from Timaru, is yet to have any punishment handed down after testing positive for a banned substance.

Dawson confirmed in May he had tested positive for a banned substance and at the time said a doctor had prescribed it for a pre-existing medical condition he had been dealing with for three years.

The Southland Sharks confirmed none of their medical team was involved in any way.

Dawson faces a possible two-year ban from playing and it is understood the process is just weeks away from being wrapped up, with a hearing still to be held with the Sports Tribunal of New Zealand.

Drug Sport NZ boss Graeme Steele said yesterday the organisation would not comment on matters that were still in the process of being sorted.

When Dawson's situation is resolved, it is likely the Sport Tribunal of New Zealand would release details of the outcome to the public.

Dawson was cut by the Sharks after it had been confirmed he had tested positive to a banned drug.

At the time, Southland Sharks board member Gareth Davis said the players were reminded of their need to advise Sharks management of any prescription medicines they were taking.

How do you expect the Breakers to perform in this season's Australian NBL?

Last season was a blip, they'll be champions once again

They'll go close to another title, beaten finalists I'd say

Playoffs for sure, but can't see them going any further

Not too excited, they'll miss the playoffs again
