The NZ Breakers probably don't need any more motivation heading into this week's Australian NBL playoffs, but they may have received some in the form of last night's annual league awards.

The Kiwi club's dominance in the regular season has not been reflected in the league's awards, with the minor premiers picking up just one gong – to bench player Kevin Braswell – on the showcase night at Melbourne's Crown Casino.

While not quite a snub, it's hard to see how the Breakers can't feel slightly aggrieved they haven't fared better after finishing five wins better than their nearest challengers on the final standings.

The Breakers decided not to attend the ceremony as they did not want to disrupt their buildup for Thursday's semifinal series opener against the Perth Wildcats – and that looked a good decision as their leading figures were largely ignored.

Kirk Penney missed out on the major prize of the night, the league MVP, to Gary Ervin, who couldn't even guide his Wollongong Hawks into the playoffs despite a strong individual season.

And in an even more bizarre decision, Andrej Lemanis was beaten for coach of the year by Townsville's Trevor Gleeson. How that could be justified when Lemanis guided the Breakers to 22 wins against the Crocs' 17 is mystifying.

Especially when you factor in that Lemanis had to cope without the presence of his best player for nearly a month while Penney chased his NBA ambitions. The Breakers easily surpassed their own record for wins in a season and were the only club to post a winning record on the road (10-4).

But Penney and Lemanis were not the only Breakers in the hardluck category. Mika Vukona missed out on best defensive player to Perth's Damian Martin, while Tom Abercrombie was shaded for most improved player by former Breaker Oscar Forman, of the Hawks.

Even Braswell's award as the league's best sixth man had an element of the unusual about it.

The southpaw point guard from Baltimore has hardly had a stellar season, shooting a less-than-spectacular 34 per cent from the floor and just 28 per cent from beyond the arc as he's averaged 10.5 points, 4.3 assists and 3.6 turnovers a game.

The Breakers did get two players on to the All-ANBL First Team, with Penney and impressive big man Gary Wilkinson being named alongside Martin, Ervin and Sydney's Julian Khazzouh in the league's premier five.

Ad Feedback

The Breakers will not be losing any sleep over the lack of recognition from across the Tasman, but if they are smart they will use it to stoke their motivational fires for the challenges ahead. As they well know, the only prize that really counts is still being decided on the court. And they're very much still in that race.

You know, looking at things objectively I don't think the Breakers should be too upset over the MVP awards. Sure Kirk Penney was a candidate but he did miss a month of the season. And there was no real standout player who carried the team, they all played their part and in MVP voting would have taken votes off each other with most of the the players putting in consistently good performances. That's why the top 3 placings (Ervin, Khazzouh & Ballinger) came from teams that aren't in the finals. Their performances were head and shoulders above most of their team mates. That gets noticed although it makes it more like a best & fairest award than an MVP.

As for coach of the year, if the Breakers didn't finish in 1st place there would be questions that needed answering. But in saying that, the Crocs only improved from a 16-12 team to a 17-11 team so the choice of Trevor Gleeson as Coach of the Year is a little hard to work out. I would put Aaron Fearne in lifting the Taipans from 7th with an 11-17 record to 3rd with 16-12 in his first head coach role to be above Gleeson. But I do agree that regardless of the talent available and the expectation of where they should finish, Andrej Lemanis did a terrific job with the Breakers and he should have won the COTY award.

BTW, I'm a 36ers fan from Adelaide but if the Breakers win the championship, good luck to them. They would deserve it IMO.

sounds a bit like the all whites winning team of the year maybe this also was based on who tried the hardest..not who actually won..cheers

Obviously this was sour grapes as the Breakers boycotted the awards so they could preprae for their Thurs play off game. No Aussie comp (NRL, ABL or A-League) will ever let a NZ tam win it. The Warrios U20 was as close as it will get. Marc Hinton had correctly been pointing out a month or so ago the refs are starting to ping the Breakers more and more as they closed in on the Minor premiership. Last year they were the most penalised team in the comp and I don't expect anything different in the playoff matches.

@ Andrew #7 Your point about Lemanis being less deserving of the Coach of the Year because he had the best roster is absolutely ridiculous. A major part of an NBL Coach's job is assembling his team's roster. The fact that Lemanis assembled possibly the best line-up in NBL history (within the limits of a salary cap and skill cap) makes him even MORE deserving of Coach of the Year.

There is no such thing as a good referee

Wolfman   #15   12:22 pm Apr 05 2011

I think you are all forgetting that the League will also most probably instruct the referee's that in no way are the Breakers to win the Title. This will be another under arm series, the Breakers will be penalised off the court. Watch this space.

Those types of award ceremonies are always a croc of s&%t anyway. Who cares about the token awards - the Breakers will get the only really meaningful prize when they win the final!

Makes winning the whole thing all the more sweeter! Who cares what the aussies have to say, lets hit them where it hurts and send Pauly off on the right note. Gooo Breakers!

Glenn has right - the under-armers are under achievers- even the refs can't hold the breakers back. Keep up the great run Andre and crew - we're backing you.

What a joke - Penney didnt even finish in the top 4 for MVP of the league. And guess what all of the top 4 didnt even get their team to the playoffs - i thought the whole point of an MVP was to make your team win. Congrats to those who have decided these awards - youve just provided more motivation for this team to go all the way while all the MVP leaders sit at home and watch the playoofs on tv
