Jack Salt led his team in rebounds in their loss to Florida.

A strong performance on the glass from Kiwi big man Jack Salt didn't help the Virginia Cavaliers as they were dispatched from the NCAA men's basketball tournament by Florida.

Salt claimed 10 rebounds to go with a block, a steal and eight points from 4-5 shooting, but the Cavaliers fell to a crushing 65-39 second round defeat.

The Virginia side weren't helped by being outscored 31-17 in the first half and, although they got more shots away than Florida, they were hurt by poor shooting.

Virginia shot below 30 per cent from the field, including 1-15 shooting from three-point range, compared to Florida's 46 per cent.

With Salt's Virginia team losing, just one Kiwi remained in the men's competition, with Tai Wynyard's Kentucky team playing in the second round today.

In the women's competition, Tall Fern Penina Davidson has made it to the second round with her University of California Berkley side after a tight 55-52 win over LSU.

The California side will now face top seeded Baylor in the second round.
