Guest post: Depth put to the test

Given the lack of media coverage, it is fair to point out that New Zealand has, somehow, generated a substantial amount of depth in the last 12-24 months.

Looking at the likely XI to play Australia in the third ODI in Hamilton on Tuesday – McCullum, Ingram, Guptill, Styris, Stewart, Broom, Hopkins, Vettori, Tuffey, Bond, Southee – New Zealand are without injured front-line players such as Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Grant Elliott, James Franklin, Jacob Oram, Ian Butler and Kyle Mills.

Even without this list of seven players, you look at the domestic scene and who is producing consistent performances and you can add names such as BJ Watling, Rob Nicol, Aaron Redmond, Kane Williamson, Nathan McCullum, Chris Martin, Michael Mason and Brent Arnel to the list of New Zealand possibles.

Former New Zealand internationals Jamie How, Michael Papps, Craig Cumming, Matthew Sinclair, Peter Fulton and Ewen Thompson continue to produce the goods at domestic level.

While some of you may well say, 'oh not those guys again,' surely the time away from the international scene has given them a chance to reassess their game and take a look at their mental approach.

Maturity can change a player markedly. We only have to look as far back as Mark Richardson to see evidence of that.

New Zealand has a golden opportunity to take a series win against Australia and it seems as though injury worries could well be the only thing to deny them that.

Without a doubt, Brendon McCullum is the key, particularly with the loss of Taylor for game three, and Martin Guptill must push on from another one of his many starts if the Black Caps are to threaten Australia. With those two more-established players to provide the bulk of the scoring, the onus is on Scott Styris to anchor the chase and hope they receive cameos throughout the order from Ingram, Stewart, Broom and Hopkins.

The bowling unit remains strong and have done pretty well to restrict Australia to 270 in both of the first two matches, particularly on such small grounds. Vettori and Bond continue to remain our strike weapons and if they can have their usual effect in Hamilton we can quickly get back to a lead in the series with two to play.

Whatever happens in the next few matches of the Chappell-Hadlee series, one thing is for sure, our depth will be put to the test, especially with the World Twenty20 in mind, which gets underway in the West Indies on April 30. Will Jesse Ryder be fit in time? What kind of team will New Zealand field with all the injuries worries that we are presently facing?

Tuffey's out:

It's enough to make you cry.

Yes - agree the depth is encouraging. I just think we need to more carefully manage the introduction of new players into the squad. Again I see crazy selection talk like "it's a toss up between Shanan and Scott as to who bats higher in the order" (or something to that effect). It ain't a toss up its a no-brainer (0 ODIs vs 160odd).

Today is a key game. We blew it on Saturday with the wrong batting order when Australia had got another sub-par total. Lets just hope that the Aussies don't fire today (Clarke's departure will muck the balance of their side up somewhat, although Hussey to 4 and Voges in at 6 maybe probably looks OK for them).

Top 30 players? how many players are there in total playing domestic cricket?

Unwell   #4   11:32 am Mar 09 2010

Not that Tuffey bowled very well in Auckland...maybe a blessing in disguise? He did bat OK though.

Michael Bates? You've got to be a Suburbs New Lynn supporter to include him. I wouldn't have him in the top 50 players in NZ. Why not Brent Arnel?

I don't think so, he's not a major/front line player, and he's only bowled well in 1 out of 3 matches so far in the tour. The other one he wasnt chosen for.

Last match 1 for 64 off 9, previous match 3 for 58, and the 20/20's 2 overs for 27 before being taken off. Second match wasn't chosen. Hardly a vote of confience that.

Good chance for Mason then to take his opportunity.

I'm crying mate! Its a total shock to the system, here we were debating batsmen, thinking our bowling was in-tact, but it looks like Mason get the go ahead anyway, but not at anyone's expense. Jesse Ryder must have ants in his pants, I'd hate to be him right now, the closest one from full recovery of our long-term injured players, yet he isn't close enough. My only worry is that there may not be enough variation from the remaining bowlers, Bond and Vettori have been playable, Southee's been useful, I just wonder how well we are able to restrict the Aussie top order with two class bowlers.

I propose an enormous, specially constructed compound, encased in a plastic bubble. All NZ players will live in the bubble between games, surrounded by soft objects. Their only training will be visualising what they will do in their next match from the comfort of their ergonomic La-Z-Boys.

How does Papps not get in that list, he has 10 domestic one day centuries and averages over 40!

Bodyline   #10   02:41 pm Mar 09 2010

I couldn't agree more Sambo, and a ODI average of 51 (all be it from just 6 games). Somthing aint right when Ingram is there instead, another wondeful socre of 5 today. One agricultural heave for 4 followed by the inevitable wicket straight after. That's 4 failures from 5 matches for him on this tour - and he's in our test side? WTF?
