October 2012 - Scallop special

As Fred Dagg once uttered, we don't know how lucky we are. As if access to New Zealand's stunningly rugged coastlines wasn't privilege enough, the ability to harvest a feed from our pristine waterways makes the average Kiwi the envy of his recreational boating peers the world over.

This month we devote 10-pages to one of New Zealand's favourite seafoods, the scallop. We turn a run-of-the-mill boat test into a scalloping adventure on Fyran's new 559 centre console pontoon runabout out of Omaha, north of Auckland, and check in with Boating's resident fisho John Eichelsheim for tips and tricks on catching the delicacy sustainably. We've even rustled up a couple of tasty scallop recipes thanks to our friends at Cuisine magazine.

The fishing theme doesn't stop there. Don't miss our Weekend Warriors feature on Ngawi cray fisherman Mike Kingi and be sure to check out the VIDEO HERE that accompanies Suzanne McFadden's story in our BLAG-page October issue.

REVIEWS
As well as testing the new Fyran 559, John Eichelsheim also savoured days out on Caribbean 40 MkII and the powerful Prestige 500s, a stunning French launch sure to be one of the headline acts at the Auckland On Water Boat Show (September 27-30). For the sailors, we review Jeanneau's distinctive 44DS (deck saloon) while John Macfarlane's second-hand buyers guide, My Boat, features the legendary Buccaneer 605 trailerboat.

CRUISING
Ever dreamed of selling up and sailing off over the horizon? If so, don't miss the first part of John Woolf's two-part series "The true cost of circumnavigating". Monthly columnist Jim Lott reflects on the interesting politics of South America and plots his next move in Victoria's World Voyage and we profile Fred Acke, a Kiwi who has spent a lifetime working on some of the world's best known boats.

RACING
October means one thing for Kiwi racing sailors - Coastal Classic time. We preview the iconic Labour Weekend race from Auckland to Russell in an interview with well-known Bay of Islands campaigner Chris Hornell. Chris will line up on October 19 on his new TP52 Kia Kaha in his 21st Coastal Classic start.

There is also news of a proposed solo sailing series from SSANZ following the success of the B&G Simrad Two-Handed Triple Series, while former GBR design team member Christian Stimson compares Emirates Team New Zealand's NZL2 with the two other AC72s now on the water at Oracle and Artemis Racing.

PLUS
With summer on the horizon, we look at seacocks in our Practical Boating pages and we put decorated seaman, author and boatingnz.co.nz cruising blogger Alvah Simon on the spot in our monthly Q&A. There's also news in On Watch and historical insights from Harold Kidd (mystery yacht Seaward) and John Macfarlane (The Alf Lock story), plus your usual diet of hot gear, around the yards and new designs.

All this and much more in the October issue of Boating New Zealand, on sale Thursday, September 27.
