A British newspaper has reported an outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting among workers at the Athletes' Village for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow - just as competitors from New Zealand begin to arrive.

The organisers of Glasgow 2014 admitted it is aware of a "small number" of cases among the workforce at the site in the Dalmarnock district and was investigating, The Guardian reported. Any residents feeling unwell have been advised to stay in their rooms and seek help.

A spokesman told The Guardian: "We have been made aware of a small number of diarrhoea and vomiting cases being reported from workforce in the village, which we are investigating."

With competitors due to start arriving this week, an advisory message has already been sent out which states there is a possibility the virus could be "highly contagious".

"Any village resident with any signs or symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting should stay in their rooms and contact the polyclinic for assistance by telephone or through their team management," reads the message.

"Workforce should notify their manager and avoid coming into work. If symptoms appear while on shift, workforce should contact their supervisor. Please remind your teams about adopting good practice in the use of regular hand-washing and sanitiser."

At the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi, several England and Australia swimmers were affected by a stomach bug, The Guardian reported.

What did you make of the Glasgow Games?

They were awesome. I couldn't get enough of them.

It was great to see NZ do well and I've enjoyed the coverage.

I caught bits and pieces but I'm glad they are over.

They were terrible. The standard of competition was poor and the end couldn't come soon enough.
