Decathletes Brent Newdick and Scott McLaren have been added to New Zealand's athletics team for next month's Commonwealth Games.

Both were required to prove their fitness and have done so over recent weeks, the New Zealand Olympic Committee said this morning.

The athletics team is now 22.

The Glasgow Games will be McLaren's first major international event.

The 32-year-old, formerly of Dunedin and now based in Auckland, won his first decathlon title 11 years ago, but has been overshadowed by Olympian Newdick.

Newdick won the silver medal at the Delhi Commonwealth Games four years ago and finished 12th at the London Olympics in 2012 with a personal best of 8114 points.
