Christchurch BHS win Gillette Cup
Christchurch Boys’ High School has won the 2007 Gillette Cup secondary schools cricket tournament in Palmerston North after a 78 run win over Westlake Boys’ High School in the final.
It is Christchurch Boys’ High’s third straight Gillette Cup win, however they have shared the title for the past two years.
For Westlake their second placed performance was their first ever Gillette Cup finals appearance.
Batting first, Christchurch piled on 259 with captain Sam Noster top scoring with 50, while up and comer Corey Anderson, a Canterbury State Championship player, contributed 44.
In reply Westlake were bowled out for 181, with left arm spinner Jordie Gibbens the pick of the Christchurch bowlers with a miserly 3 wickets for 12.
Captain Sam Noster says his players are rapt with the victory and as a year 13 student in his last year at Christchurch Boys’ High the win is extra sweet.
"I think the boys played really well over the last four days, it’s great to win for a third time and finally to win outright after having to share it for the last two years is good", says Noster.
Tauranga Boys’ College claimed third place after a 14 run win over Palmerston North Boys’ High School.
Northern Districts rep Kane Williamson was the star for Tauranga scoring a century in his side’s score of 196. In reply Palmerston North were all out for 182 with Tauranga’s Brett Hampton taking 5 wickets.
Wellington College claimed fifth after downing Hamilton Boys’ by 3 wickets.
Wanganui Collegiate took out seventh spot. In a Gillette Cup first Wanganui tied with Kavanagh College but took seventh spot as they didn’t lose as many wickets as Kavanagh.
