Cricket sponsor silences 'rebel' Craig McMillan

India's influence on world cricket has now extended to the commentary box.
Former New Zealand batsman Craig McMillan can't get a word in on Sky TV because of his link to the rebel Indian Cricket League, an organisation the Indian board views as possessing cricket's equivalent of rabies.
Sky has been warned that using "Macca" will upset broadcasting giant Sony Entertainment, which not only paid $1 billion to be the host broadcaster of the Indian Premier League but also holds the rights of all cricket televised out of New Zealand.
McMillan was in Hamilton on Wednesday night for the fourth one-day international but remained at the back of the commentary box.
He referred all comment on the matter to Sky TV's acting executive producer, cricket, James Cameron, who admitted McMillan's situation was a delicate one.
Cameron said McMillan had been pencilled in to commentate on the second test in Napier because Ravi Shastri had to return home for a birthday.
"Ravi mentioned there could be a problem because Craig played in the Indian Cricket League," Cameron said.
"I've told Sony that Craig could be in the mix for the second test because I have a hole in the team but I've not heard back from them.
"I don't like the idea of us being told who we can and can't use but ..."
Ironically Shastri is on the board of the IPL.
Cameron said whatever the outcome McMillan had a future with Sky.
"Macca is really keen, and at the moment he is with us to get up to speed and there is no doubt he will be in the mix."

AS a Indian cricket fan I do not agree to BCCI. What can possible happen If someone doing the commentary. I enjoyed the tour so far. Love the commentary of Martin Crowe.
I would love to see Shane Bond play for New Zealand. Had he waited for little longer, he would be easily highest paid bowler in IPL. Indian batsmen will be jumping to Shane Bond bowling. Hope to see him play in future.
Indian Cricket fan from US.
I don't think that we should let the indians run world cricket. They have to much influence as it is. Look when we had no choice but to play the indian test stars in our provincial teams. This is a sad state of affairs. If the shoe was on the other foot, I beat you any amount of money the indians would not do the same thing to our test stars. D
There are two points that need to be considered:
1. Would any organisation willingly allow a competitor to exist and use its resources. Would the NZRFU allow another bother to exist that contracts players, vies for advertising and sponsorship, fields a "national" team, wearing a black uniform and playing at Eden Park. What would be the reaction of Adidas? 2. The ICC is not a separate independent body such as FIFA. It is basically made up of representatives (mainly CEs) of test playing national bodies. Thus, in some ways criticising the ICC is pointless as it has no power in itself, but only that as derived by the bodies that constitute it. If the majority of its members agree to something, there is no mechanism to override it. It could be argued that the BCCI as undue influence over the voting procedures because of its financial leverage, but that is all.
Could you and all people commenting here please refrain from using the letters 'I' 'C' and 'L' within the same paragraph. It is grossly offensive and highly litigious. The Indian players, their families, fans, grandmothers, lawyers and IPL financial backers should not have to suffer this blatant disregard for the omnipotence of the BCCI. What? Who said that? SILENCE! THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE LEAGUE!
Sorry about that. Mother, a little bitty please. Shashank Manohar, President, Board of Control for Cricket in India.
NZC will make a huge proportion of it's television revenue from this 5 week tour. Justin Vaughn said this will be the best year NZ Cricket has had because of it. More money for players, ground maintenance, coaches, equipment for clubs etc... Why bite the hand that feeds for a paltry show of defiance?
Two thirds of all the money in World cricket comes from India - we need them to tour here more than every 6 years! and certainly won't want to do that if they have to play test matches on pitches not suitable for club cricket - to those people that want wickets akin to tour of 2002-3 which had the lowest runs per wicket of any series in the modern era.
The ICL, apart from not being sanctioned by the ICC - not that that should be a gold standard, don't contribute revenue to the BCCI the way the IPL does. The ICL gives nothing back.
If a rebel NPC started up in NZ and didn't give any money to NZ Rugby do you think the NZRU would tolerate it? Do you think they would go to any lengths to make sure the earning potential of the league and it's players were limited wherever possible?
I dislike the BCCI as much as the next person but their reputation as a bunch of power hungry bullies is blurring the fact that they actually have a point here. And NZ cricket know that if they want the money they have to offer more often then every few years they will have to bow down to the financial overlords.
We should have the right to pick the best players available for our National team at all times, including overseas players. no matter what comp they play in, we should be able to pick them. NO BUTTS. NZ Cricket----- GROW SOME BALLS!!!! The names BOND, Shane Bond!
This is getting a bit silly isn't it? As far as I can remember I never heard boo about this ICL League when it was apparently on, compared to the IPL which was broadcast on SKY.
The cricket world really doesn't need the BCCI and the broadcaster Sony bossing other countries around because some of the players went and played in the "rebel" league. It is a great shame that we can't select someone like Shane Bond for our national team just because he played in an unsanctioned tournament. And it's even sillier that they can force an ex-player out of the commentary box just because he played in the ICL.
Outrageous!!!!!!
RE numbers 18 and 15. My point is they made their choice, knowing the consequences. Anything else is irrelevent. My example with the All Blacks was that it is no use a player signing to play overseas and then whinging they can't play for the All Blacks.
McMillan Bond Tuffey etc took the cash knowing what would happen. They can't whinge that things are unfair - simple as that
I like some of the comments here, these guys want their players to play for IPL but dont want IPL to be run the way IPL / BCCI wants. why ? you can't have both ways. Remember IPL has no dearth of international plyaers. But for Kiwi cricketers it is the good way of making some extra money , even they have families and their retirement to take care of. and what is wrong with the playing by the rules ? IPL made a rule of not accepting anyone with ICL association. so be it it is their league. if you dont like it don't join it.
I liked that workplace descrimination argument. Nobody is stopping him from doing TV commentary but he cant be employee of ICL as well as IPL. That is bit laughable isnt it ?
Did someone talk about making wickets for Indian team ? yeah right!!! what happened in 20-20 was that allright ? Now I am expecting someone to say that Indian's made the rain as well to affect the match. LOL get some grey cells dude.... dont act like sour grapes.. arguments sound very similar to what were made during AB's world cup exit. Grow Up.

BCCI has become a monster crazed by its own power. BCCI can only act as a bully as long as other Cricket Boards succumb to it. If the top 3 or 4 cricket boards act with some backbone, BCCI will blink first.
If England , Australia, NZ and South Africa refuse to play with India on obnoxious BCCI terms, then India will have no major opponet to play against (They've played against SL till fans have tears of boredom coming out of their eyes , Indo-Pak series are at least 2 or 3 years away). Who does that leave ?
Without International Cricket, BCCI coffers will run dry. So used to the big bucks are they, that they will collapse to their knees in no time.
BCCI's problem with ICL is its own internal problem and while I see the vested interest for BCCI to have other Boards adopt an Anti-ICL stance, I am shocked why other Boards have to succumb to such demands.
Last but not the least, I am an Indian & am ashamed at the bullying tactics of the BCCI and equally appalled by the spinelessness of so many other Cricket Boards (shame on them also).
