Shane Bond could be back wearing New Zealand colours sooner than expected.

The side to tour Sri Lanka will be named at the end of the week and the bush telegraph suggests a spot will be left open for Bond in the one-day side provided he looks up to speed on a New Zealand A tour to India which pretty much runs concurrently.

If Bond looks sharp enough in the early stages of the A tour he will then make the 75-minute flight from Chennai to Colombo for the five-match one-day leg.

The Canterbury fast bowler has requested he not be considered for the test leg of the tour to Sri Lanka because he has been off the scene for two years because of his link with the rebel Indian Cricket League.

Picking the test XI is a straightforward exercise but the job of the national selectors is to pick a 15-man party and the choice of backup players is open to much debate.

With Brendon McCullum slipping into the injury-prone category, presumably room will have to be made for a second gloveman, which according to the contract list released last week is Gareth Hopkins.

Strangely, there is no backup test batsman on the contract list and the spot in Sri Lanka might go to Aaron Redmond ahead of Peter Fulton and Jamie How.

As for backup all-rounder to Jacob Oram, that might see Grant Elliott pip his Wellington team-mate, James Franklin, or they both might go at the expense of paceman Kyle Mills.

New Zealand open their tour with a three-day game against a local selection in Colombo on August 13 and the first test begins five days later.

Possible test squad: Daniel Vettori (captain), Tim McIntosh, Martin Guptill, Daniel Flynn, Ross Taylor, Jesse Ryder, Jacob Oram, Brendon McCullum, Jeetan Patel, Iain O'Brien, Chris Martin, Aaron Redmond, Grant Elliott, Gareth Hopkins, James Franklin or Kyle Mills.

Yep - no doubt about it. Bond is the greatest fast bowler of all time just as Vettori is the greatest spinner of all time and Fleming is the greatest captain of all time. The figures prove it all.

Bond....Over Rated? i dont think so! surprised to hear that from an aussie...considering every time Bond plays you he ripps up. Mitchell Johnson is a world class player but hes no Shane Bond!

Nice try at baiting, aussie fan... yawn.

Great to see Bondy back - he's class even if he's no doubt lost some pace. Will love seeing him in the ODIs and 20/20s, and think it's sensible for him to not play in tests at least until his fitness is proven.

I'm getting goosebumps...

"Even before he signed with the ICL, he wasn't bowling at his best". What a load of tosh. He regularly ran through your batsmen. He is now 34 and certainly won't have the pace of yesteryear, but neither did Mcgrath and he was still pretty useful if I recall. 70 odd test wickets at low 20's is pretty good. Hey sunshine the Aussies aren't that flash either, having had their butts kicked by the yarpies and India.

Agree with you that NZ cricket is crap, most annoying team to support, but you dont rate Shane Bond? He made guys like Lara and Gilchrist look like chumps and on a regular basis made the rest of the Aussie batting line up look average. From memory a number of his best bowling perfomances were against Aussie, including a hat-trick and a couple of 5 wicket bags.....

ODIs - 67 games for 125 wickets at 19 Tests - 17 games for 79 wickets at 22

aussie fan... lol this is coming from a team that got how far in the 20/20 world cup... i also can't wait for the poms to really give it to an inexperienced and largely WEAK austrialian team

I think a lot of people are overrating Bond. Even before he signed with the ICL, he wasn't bowling at his best. I would rate Mitchell Johnson over him. Besides, NZ cricket is crap anyway

.......Music to the ears for the anguished supporters of NZ cricket!!! My guess he may be a half a yard down on pace........but his class will show through. We all know how good Shane performed at international level, he is a world class performer. His attitude and hunger for winning was always to the fore when he played for NZ. Hopefully that will rub off on to some of his Kiwi teammates. I can't wait to see those 150kph in-duckers turning opening batsmen inside out!!!!
