Jesse Ryder faced misconduct charge

New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder last month faced a New Zealand Cricket (NZC) hearing over his conduct at the Champions Trophy in South Africa, it was revealed today.

The hearing stemmed from an incident following the match against Sri Lanka, where Ryder swiped 74 off just 58 balls after aggravating an adductor strain.

The injury ruled him out of the remainder of the eight-nation tournament, and he has not played since.

After walking from the field, Ryder struck and broke a chair with his bat as he approached the dressing room. He was subsequently fined 15 percent of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching the International Cricket Council's (ICC) code of conduct.

Ryder also faced an NZC misconduct charge, stemming from abuse levelled at Black Caps manager Dave Currie in the dressing rooms during the Sri Lanka match, The NZ Herald said today.

The tirade came after Currie reprimanded Ryder for smashing the chair.

Ryder was represented at the NZC hearing on October 22 by Players' Association manager Heath Mills. No details are available regarding the hearing's content or any punishment.

It is understood Ryder's remorse led to the charge being downgraded from serious misconduct, which can result in contract termination.

Ryder's manager, Aaron Klee, said that issue was "done and dusted", and Ryder had made his peace with Currie.

Ryder has had a chequered cricketing career. He was dropped in January this year for a one-day cricket international against the West Indies in Auckland for alcohol-related indiscretion.

Ryder missed a team meeting in Auckland and was subsequently not able to train following a late night of drinking in Wellington.

And in February 2008, Ryder damaged the index finger and thumb on his hand when he broke a window at a Christchurch bar early one morning.

The day before, Ryder had been part of a New Zealand team who completed a 3-1 one-day series win over England.

He required a reconstruction to the exterior tendon on his index finger, a flap reconstruction and a skin graft, and was out of cricket until returning for the New Zealand tour to Bangladesh in October 2008.
