Black Caps test changes inevitable

After what seems like an eternity, attention will switch back to test cricket when the New Zealand selectors today name a team likely to contain at least one new cap for the one-off test against Bangladesh.
First-class cricket has been in recess since December, meaning the selection panel of Glenn Turner, captain Dan Vettori and new coach Mark Greatbatch has to put aside the surfeit of domestic Twenty20 and one-day matches played in the intervening period.
Greatbatch admitted the selectors' job had been complicated by the domestic Twenty20 competition played throughout January.
"It is not ideal scheduling but we cannot do anything about that," he said.
"We had the test series against Pakistan earlier in the season and the basis of the side will come from that. There may be a couple of surprises."
The panel intend choosing a 13-man squad for the test, which starts in Hamilton on Monday, meaning at least one new cap and possibly more will feature as they seek to fill two holes left by retirement and injury.
Out of the reckoning from the side which drew the third test against Pakistan in Napier before Christmas are fast bowler Iain O'Brien, who has retired, and batsman Grant Elliott, who remains unavailable due to a knee injury.
Elliott was the 12th man in Napier, when Vettori moved up the order to fill a specialist role at No 6. Vettori marked the occasion by scoring 134, and there is no reason to suggest he will not continue to fill the allrounder's brief.
While one-day newcomer Andy McKay looms as a potential replacement for O'Brien, given the positive impression he has made since joining that squad a week ago, Elliott's position and possibly that of No 5 batsman Daniel Flynn are up for grabs.
Flynn is vulnerable, having not cemented his position and averaging just 28.70 after 16 tests, although the selectors may want to persevere with him at No 5 after most of his tests saw him in the taxing No 3 position.
A readymade replacement or a new addition could be found in Otago's Neil Broom, who hit 566 runs at an average of 94.33, including three centuries, during the pre-Christmas Plunket Shield programme.
Into his eighth season at first-class level, Broom, 26, has served his apprenticeship, averaging close to 43 with eight centuries to his credit.
Another name likely to at least be tossed about in deliberations is that of teenager Kane Williamson, who impressed knowledgable observers by scoring in excess of 800 runs at slightly more than 50 an innings in his first full season for Northern Districts in 2008-09.
The 19-year-old hit a dry patch in the Plunket Shield competition at the start of the summer but has since regained his form and confidence in the one-day arena, with two centuries and more than 300 runs this side of the New Year.
Also in Williamson's favour is his ability to offer overs of offspin, which could be handy if the New Zealanders continue to operate a three-pronged pace attack complemented by Vettori's left-arm spin.
Possible squad: Dan Vettori (captain), Tim McIntosh, BJ Watling, Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor, Neil Broom, Brendon McCullum, Daryl Tuffey, Tim Southee, Andy McKay, Chris Martin, Jeetan Patel, Kane Williamson.

Butler's body can't handle test cricket, he plays with a sore back all the time.
Ingram's averaged 60 in first class cricket over the last 3 seasons, he may not move his feet, but if he can score 50, that's a damn sight better than most of the poor buggers who've been through the turnstyle in the last 5 years.
Flynn will be back in the NZ team once he works himself out. For the time being, he will be stood down. NZ cricket should make sure he's playing in England or Northern Australia in the winter.
Broom has earned his chance.
Williamson will play for NZ at some point, that is a given, it's all a matter of when. He still isn't 20. I think it would be cruel to have him in the squad and not play him, he's better off continuing to score runs elsewhere if he's not going to get on the park for the kiwis.
McKay will play, what a rise from obscurity this has been.
My team: McIntosh, Ingram, Guptill, Taylor, Broom, Vettori (c), McCullum (w), Tuffey, Southee, Mckay, Martin, Watling (12th man)
Hamilton is likely to turn, so it's a rough call for Jeets, but Guptill's proven he can at least roll his arm over. It's a tough call for Watling too, but he hasn't followed up his debut by putting runs on the board at 1st Class level.
Not sure how they will go. I expect McIntosh will stay until the end of the Oz tests and if he doesn't make any impact will be gone after that. They will be looking ahead to the Oz tests and picking a team for that.
With that in mind, I suspect the selectors will be thinking a bit conservatively and not want to blood too many new players. Having said that, McKay could be in for a start as could Broom. However, I doubt Williamson will be as that would make the batting lineup extremely inexperienced at international level.
If it was me, I'd be picking Williamson, playing him at 6 as a back-up spin option, and having Vettori, Tuffey, McKay and Martin as the frontline bowlers. Also plays to NZ's traditional strength of a strong middle to lower batting order.
However, they are likely to mostly stick to what they know with Broom and McKay (in for Flynn and O'Brien respectively) the only newcomers to the starting lineup.
Here's the team I think they'll pick for playing XI: Tim McIntosh, BJ Watling, Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor, Neil Broom, Dan Vettori (c), Brendon McCullum, Daryl Tuffey, Tim Southee/Jeetan Patel, Andy McKay, Chris Martin.
Williamson probably in the squad of 13.
Flynn needs to score runs in first class cricket just like everyone else, his free ride is over. Have a look at his stats over the last year... No form for a very long time, he shouldn't even be in the ND side. Let's give someone else ago please.
Persevere with McIntosh for a series or two. Wattling looks to have an excellent technique for an opener (Ingram doesn't for test level). Flynn, as everyone is saying needs to go, bring in Broom at 5. Vetorri stays at 6 and McCullum at 7. Definitely bring in McKay, we need someone who can consistently bowl at above 140kph.
@ #5 and #7
Ever heard of a guy called Nathan Astle? He didn't move his feet either. He had hand eye co-ordination to do the job. Have you watched Ingram paly domestically or actually reviewed his domestic stats over the last two to three years?
Ingram should have been selected before McIntosh and before Watling. His time has come.
There is no chance that Williamson will make this squad. Ingram will make the squad before him. Other than that the squad is probably correct. Broom must be a certainty given his domestic form this year. It is time for him to get a test debut. McKay ought to be named, but I wouldn't mind seeing Butler come in for Southee either.
Mcintosh is useless, not up to the level of international cricket. hell prob get a couple of 50s against bangladesh then we will keep him in the team for the next 5 years while he struggles to get more than 10.
One definite change for me - Goodbye Flynn, just as bad as Fulton, and bring in Broom. His stats don't lie this year and especially in the longer format of the domestic comp he has been carving teams up.
McIntosh for Ingram could be an option but McIntosh has been getting good runs in the Domestic One-Day Comp which could be a sign he is looking to score quicker which would help his cause a little - he was way too slow against Pakistan. If not then Ingram looks the logical replacement, or even Jamie How

Are you insinuating that Dan Vettori isn't man enough to drop Flyn? Of course he would. He wants to win so he will, along with the other selectors, put the best team for the conditions on the park. The guy is a pro.
If Flynn gets selected I think that he could be considered lucky, especially as this test could be seen as the ideal opportunity to blood a newbie like Williamson or Broom. However if he does get the chance I hope he makes the most of it. He does have some guts.
I wonder if Brent Arnel is in the frame as a NZ contracted player, and the test will be on his home turf? Andy McKay has certainly impressed, and god knows we can do with a bit of zip. Will find out later today no doubt.
Ingram is the luckiest player i have ever scene. Has the worst batting stance ever. If you bat like that in club cricket you find yourself batting at 9-10. Mcintosh is mud he has had his chances now get rid of him as for Flynn well will just say MUD.. Broom is awesome and has proven himself time and time again. I have never rated Daniel Flynn, never supported his NZ selection but am pleased others have finally jumped on the bandwagon and accepted he needs to go back to domestic cricket. #1 are you a nutter? What more does Broom need to do to get a Test Debut? Why is there no discussion of Franklin, who is solid as a rock and a far better 5th bowling option than Elliott. Watling is untested, lets see how he goes before saying he is awesome. McIntosh is no Richardson, but deserves one last chance ahead of Ingram (who may or may not come off). Guptill is lucky as well, would like to see Sinclair back, but can he handle the no 3 position? Not a big fan of either Tuffey or Southee, Tuffey gets there on his superior batting and experience. Arnel has not quite done enough for me. Kane Williamson has a way to go before rushing him in. Let see him dominate 4-dayers first, where he has been not good at all.
My team: McIntosh, Watling, Guptill, Taylor, Broom, Franklin, Vettori, McCullum, Tuffey, Mckay, Martin. 12 Patel, 13 Southee.
