When Scott Styris was diving around scraping his knees playing backyard cricket he never envisaged he would one day end up kitted out like this.

The New Zealand limited overs specialist yesterday modelled the Black Caps new look for the 2008-09 summer - a wardrobe that bears little resemblance to its one-day international predecessors, except of course for the predominantly black playing strip.

The outer layer - there are three, including a base layer and polar fleece style sleeveless jersey for those chilly sessions in the field - also has silver panels.

Two years of research and development has been devoted to playing gear designed to pull perspiration from the body so it can evaporate.

The lightweight "baselayer" shirts are designed to control player temperature and prevent muscle fatigue.

Three sensory patches on the cuff and neck change colour - grey dots go red when it's cold; red dots change to orange when temperatures rise, warning players to either rug up or rehydrate.

Given black traditionally attracts heat, keeping players comfortable was a priority.

The current squad will also be issued with three pairs of pants - specifically for bowling, batting and fielding.

Bowlers on the tour of England in May trialled the trousers which feature a microfibre panel to help polish the ball and enable it to swing. There is also a built in chamois towel for keeping hands dry.

The fielding pants also feature a panel to reduce friction burns and jarring when fielding while the batting pants have ventilation areas at the back, groin and behind the knee to keep players cool when padded up.

Traditionalists may baulk but it is the cable knit jumper that has been well and truly put out to pasture.

It has been superseded by a lightweight sleeveless jersey made of bonded microfibre fleece.

Asked if he had ever expected the gear to be so technically advanced, Styris offered a bemused: "No."

"It's good though. It's important to feel comfortable when you're out in the middle. We saw (on the tour of England) Hampshire and Yorkshire in their gear so we knew what we were in for.

"It's a slim fit so the boys might have to get to the gym a bit more."

Styris said Bangladesh would be an ideal testing ground for the new breathable fabrics -- the team leave tomorrow for the sub-continent for three ODIs and two tests.

"Black attracts the sun so anything you can do to make sure you haven't got a wet back at the end of your (bowling) spell has to be good."

The test side will be equipped with the same Canterbury of New Zealand wardrobe, in cream.

Meanwhile, the shirts are emblazoned with a new sponsor, after NZC unveiled a multi-million dollar three-year sponsorship deal with Dubai-based real estate developer Dheeraj and East Coast (DEC).

DEC joins the National Bank as NZC's marquee sponsors.

What do you think of the new Black Caps uniforms?

New kit looks pretty sharp and a good modern look after a number of years of the same old boring thing which that other no name brand put out!

Good to have a proper brand back with them.

wike the fabric but gotta agree that the colours and design all look wrong. surely this is just the off feild stuff and there will be a different one for on feild. at least have the pants matching the tops!

looks prety good actually.

I think that the light makes the black look slightly navy. (I hope)

The main thing is that their comfortable and Styris seems happy enough.

In the end who really cares they get paid to play cricket not to look good. As long they win more games and become consistant it doesnt matter how they look.

The new uniform may be cool but it is ugly - I will continue to cherish the black with silver fern (the most distinctive shirt) and the beige brigade (the most nostagic). NZ Cricket will not get my money to update to new design - I will stay "cool" in the old one!

I think its a good start getting more in depth with players needs reguarding their uniforms. Unfortunately, they are not the nicest looking, surely we need to find find some sort of balance between player comfort and style. Good luck with that.

you do realise that if your actually thirsty its too late and you should of been drinking early, this actually lets u know before your thirsty u need to rehydrate, its actually a very good idea.

however yes, they are bloody ugly.

I'd prefer to hear two years of research and development devoted to improving skills, mental toughness and all-round (literally) playing standards from grass roots through to intermediate / high school / tertiary level and beyond than worrying about perspiration - no wonder we're so hopeless!!! - aarrggh.

I didn't know 1980's men's super brand 'Warnocks' had won the contract for the blackcaps. What's next, hyper colour t's?

This makes me angrier than that time that I found out that the taller Marshall twin wasn't a chick - needless to say I had to dispose of a few cricket almanacs that evening.

This uniform is an abomination. It looks like Blair Pocock should be wearing it, strutting out to the middle for Auckland in the 1996 Shell Cup.

Also, sensory patches? Are the black caps cyborgs who need reminding of when they are thirsty or too cold?

The shirt seems to have the artifical intelligence of David Hasslehoff's K.I.T.T. but have the exterior appeal of say, Scott Styris.

This is really a throw back to the 'bad old days'.

That is the worst looking uniform we've had in years. Looks like some ugly training shirt. The look on Piggy's face says it all
