First Plunket Shield match goes to Otago
Otago have won the opening match of cricket's Plunket Shield, by eight wickets over Canterbury in Rangiora.
Set 267 to win, Otago cruised to victory on the back of a second hundred from former skipper Aaron Redmond.
Redmond scored 133 in the first innings and 123 today - the 11th time two centuries have been scored in a match for Otago and the second time Redmond has done it.
With Hamish Rutherford, Redmond added 54 for the first wicket before Redmond and Michael Bracewell put on 164 for the second wicket.
Bracewell ended the match unbeaten on 88.
Earlier Canterbury had added 45 to their overnight score of 307-8 as Todd Astle (78) scored his second half century of the match and debutant Ben McCord scored an impressive 47.
But on a flat Mainpower Oval wicket, 267 was always going to be tough to defend and when Redmond continued his good form from the first innings, the game was always in Otago's favour.
