A magnificent rearguard from Alastair Cook and Matt Prior has given England hope of saving the first cricket test against India in Ahmedabad.

The tourists head into the fifth and final day leading by 10 runs with five wickets remaining, on the back of an unbeaten 141-run sixth wicket partnership between captain Cook, who is 168 not out, and wicketkeeper Prior, who will resume this evening (NZT) on 84.

It looked as though England's only fate was defeat when they staggered to 199-5 in their second innings, at that point still trailing India by 131 runs after the hosts piled on 521-8 declared in their first innings and routed England for 191 in their first dig, forcing them to follow on.

But Cook's 21st test hundred, which has included 20 fours and lasted 341 balls, and Prior's 23rd half century, which has included 10 boundaries from 190 balls, has given them an outside chance to staving off defeat.
