Central Districts have strengthened their grip on Cricket's Plunket Shield with a four wicket win over Canterbury.

The Stags, chasing 259 for victory on the final day at Rangiora reached the target before lunch to stay on top of the six-team competition with just one round remaining.

Probable wins to the Stags' main rivals, Northern Districts and Otago, mean the competition should go down to the final round, starting on Wednesday.

After reaching 145-0 in their chase last night, CD's bid for their sixth outright win of the season looked a fait accompli, but three late wickets last night kept Canterbury interested.

They removed nightwatchman Ajaz Patel early this morning then skipper Kieran Noema-Barnett with more than 50 needed.

But, as he has done numerous time, Mathew Sinclair did the hard work and all but saw CD to the finish.

He was out with just four required, but not before registering his 68th first class half century.
