Mitchell McClenaghan gets the 'Big Show' treatment in the IPL
Australian cricket all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has given Black Caps seamer Mitchell McClenaghan the 'Big Show' treatment in the Indian Premier League.
McClenaghan was on the receiving end of a 28-run pasting in one over as Maxwell, dubbed the 'Big Show' for unorthodox big-hitting, belted the Kiwi for three sixes and two fours in just five balls as Kings XI Punjab hosted the Mumabi Indians in Indore.
Maxwell was out for 40 off 22 balls soon after, but the cameo was the perfect foil for Kings XI team-mate Hashim Amla who scored a stunning unbeaten century, finishing on 104 from just 60 balls in the IPL match on Thursday (NZT Friday).
The batting blitz ruined what were otherwise good figures for McClenaghan, who finished with 2-46 from his four overs, taking the wickets of Australians Shaun Marsh and Marcus Stoinis.
Bowling for Mumbai, Sri Lankan veteran Lasith Malinga copped some punishment, conceeding a mammoth 58 in a wicketless four overs.
Maxwell and Amla's brilliant batting would not be enough for the Kings XI though as they set Mumbai 199 to win.
The Indians would chase down the total with ease, achieving victory with a remarkable 27 balls to spare and with eight wickets in hand.
The Mumbai top order was on-fire in pursuit with Parthiv Patel and England international Joss Buttler providing the early impetus before the former departed at 80-1 after just six overs having hit four fours and two sixes.
Former Indian wicketkeeper Patel hit 37 off 18 opening alongside Buttler who would crush 77 off 37 balls before being dismissed with Mumbai on 166-2 with the win all-but secure.
Nitish Rana would thump 62 off 34 for Mumbai and Hardik Pandya belted 15 not out off four balls to finish the job for the visitors as they cruised home in the 16th over.
The victory sent Mumbai back to the top of the IPL ladder.
