Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum was left ruing a test win that got away from his side in Dunedin.

The Black Caps' test cricket drought will continue at least another week because of rain.

The final day of the first test between New Zealand and the West Indies has been abandoned because of a fifth day downpour and the match drawn.

Rain forced the players from the field in Dunedin at 3.05pm and they never got back on. The match was called off officially at 6.07pm.

New Zealand required 112 for victory and were 79-4 when the rain came.

It has been more than a year since New Zealand won a test, their last coming away to Sri Lanka in November 2012.

This one looked for all intents and purposes to be theirs.

They scored 609-9 declared in the first innings on the back of a fine double hundred to Ross Taylor, a drought-breaking century to captain Brendon McCullum and half centuries to Hamish Rutherford and Peter Fulton.

In reply, the West Indies scored just 213 and the follow-on was enforced.

Then it became the Darren Bravo show.

He scored 218 - the highest test score at University Oval - and batted more than nine and a half hours to help his side make New Zealand bat again.

The West Indies' second innings of 507 all out was their fourth highest second innings total of all time and ensured they had a 111 run lead.

Bravo became the seventh player to score a double century following on.

New Zealand and the West Indies meet again at the Basin Reserve for the second test, starting on Wednesday.
