Too easy for Black Caps as Windies collapse
A dramatic last-session performance from New Zealand's bowlers has left their side on the verge of a test series triumph.
At stumps on day three of the third and final test against the West Indies in Hamilton today, the hosts were six without loss in their second innings after dismissing the tourists for an embarrassing 103 in 31.5 overs.
That left the Black Caps chasing another 116 runs for a second consecutive test victory and a 2-0 series win.
Among the carnage, paceman Tim Southee became the 12th New Zealander to reach 100 test wickets when he trapped Windies No 10 Veerasammy Permaul lbw.
The Black Caps began the session after tea knowing that a useful performance with the bat from the Windies would leave the home side with a testing final day batting on Monday.
However, the tourists made a hash of their opportunity, as poor shots and some sharp New Zealand catching behind the wicket saw wickets tumble alarmingly. Kane Williamson took a screamer diving low to his right at gully to dismiss Windies dangerman Shivnarine Chanderpaul while Southee snared a sharp chance at third slip to get Kieran Powell for a duck.
Trent Boult was again New Zealand's new-ball spearhead as he ripped through the West Indies top order.
The left-arm swing bowler reduced the Windies to 13-3 after they had gained an 18-run advantage at the end of New Zealand's first innings. He finished the day with 4-23 from 10 overs, while Southee took three wickets in the last over of the innings to end with 3-12.
Boult has now taken 20 wickets in the series at an average of 15.40 to share the stardom with teammate Ross Taylor.
New Zealand's premier batsman made his third ton in as many tests - including a double-century - to help guide a patchy batting effort as the hosts were bowled out for 349 in reply to the Windies' tally of 367.
Taylor was eventually dismissed for 131, made from 264 balls and featuring 16 fours and two sixes, as the visitors gained a first innings lead in a test that seemed to be wonderfully poised at tea on day three.
That backed up Taylor's previous scores this series of 217 not out and 16 not out in the opening test in Dunedin, and 129 in the second test in Wellington.
Taylor's 11th test century saw him become just the second New Zealand player to score centuries in three consecutive tests after Mark Burgess did the same over the extended period of 1969 to 1972.
Corey Anderson made 39 off 62 balls, featuring seven fours, but the hosts lost wickets at regular intervals as the visitors toiled away, chiefly through the guile of off-spiner Sunil Narine.
He finished the innings with the test-career best figures of 6-91 off 42.3 overs in which he gave testing examinations to all the NZ batsmen.

Should the NZ selectors pick Jesse Ryder if he's available?
