Honours were even after an eventful first day of Plunket Shield cricket action as Canterbury and Otago resumed their four-day campaigns in Dunedin.

Otago reached stumps at 47-2 in reply to Canterbury's 280 all out.

Tom Latham was Canterbury's best, his 93 taking him past 500 runs this season in just his fourth match while Otago spinner Mark Craig took 5-56 for the home side after his captain, Derek de Boorder, inserted the Cantabs.

Latham added 71 for the first wicket with Canterbury skipper Peter Fulton (18), but a mini-collapse saw the visitors drop from 166-3 to 167-6.

Brad Cachopa (37) and Todd Astle (52) then added 83 for the seventh wicket to help their side reach a batting bonus-point, then go on to reach 280.

James McMillan and Sam Wells both grabbed two wickets for Otago.

With just 11 overs to bat, Otago started positively, taking eight off the first over.

But both openers had their stumps rearragend by the Canterbury opening bowlers.

Aaron Redmond was bowled by Matt Henry for 28 while Hamish Rutherford was skittled by Ryan McCone for four.

Michael Bracewell will resume tomorrow morning on 10 with nightwatchman Neil Wagner with him, but yet to score.

Should the NZ selectors pick Jesse Ryder if he's available?

Yep, he's in great form and deserves a crack.

As long as he promises to stay out of trouble.

Only if there's an injury crisis.

No way, Jose. He's had his fair share of chances.
