The November issue is all about big fish.
It starts on the cover with Mark Pickard’s 75kg bass, caught out the back of the Mokohinaus just a week or so ago and follows on with a 50kg plus kingfish landed a great deal further offshore. Had it been in better condition, it may well have been a world record.
There was a huge blue marlin caught in Hawaii and Kydd Pollock has relayed that story back to us while we also run a piece on a blue marlin caught about Hakula in Vava’u, Tonga that pulled the scales down to just under the magical 1000 pound mark. Unfortunately the fish died on the angler who handed the rod over after a big effort to raise it himself.
Getting back to the local scene Scott Lloyd-Jones shares some stories of battle past with big kingfish while Josh Morrison continues with the third article in his Jigging 101 series. This month he looks at the jigs themselves.
Kane Wrigglesworth checks out smooth-hounds off the beach while staying with land-based fishing, Sam Mossman shares some tips for fly tying using easily accessed materials. Expert salt fly exponent Craig Worthington explains why he has so much trouble catching porae despite their abundance around our shoreline. Southern man Kevin O’Hanlon checks out fishing the southern lakes, many of which open for business for the start of the new season on November 1.
Slow jigging is a technique many are coming to terms with quickly with some great results, especially on the big snapper starting their spawning runs. In this issue editor Grant Dixon looks at tackle options following on from last month’s lure options. In the boating department the magazine’s staff spent a day on Tarawera recently reviewing 13 centre and side console configurations from various manufacturers and discovered these boats can be as simple or as sophisticated as their owners want them to be.
Sam Mossman’s Trailerboat trial this month is on the Extreme 750 Game King, the big brother of the magazine’s own project boat.
Silver drummer is a species few anglers target and Adam Clancey explains how he intends going about hunting down another species for his ‘bucket’ list. A new series of Adam’s show Black Magic Fishing NZ commences another season mid-month on prime with details in this issue. It is great to see the number of locally produced fishing shows making their appearance on our screens. It can only be good for our sport.
Adding to the above is the usual line-up of regular columnists and area reports. Get this month’s copy and armed with the genuine oil, get out there and do it!
