Fishing
It was a lovely day in Kiwiton. The sun was shining and the sea was calm.
It was summer break, and Hiwi the Kiwi got bored in his burrow. He was “too young to go out” his parents would say. “Could get caught by Big Kiwi.”
He was a big stinker, Big Kiwi was.
“Can I go on the X-Box?” asked Hiwi.
“No,” said Dad.
“Pinball machine?”
“No.”
Then Hiwi had a brain flash.
“Can you take me fishing?” he asked.
His parents looked at each other.
“OK,” they said.
Out in the old dusty garage, Hiwi and Dad were searching frantically for the old, silver “Kiwi-Fisher” rods and hooks. His red and white sinkers and smelly fish bait had already been found and were thrown quickly (due to the smell!) into the green fishing bag. After a lot of crashing and complaints, everything was in the bag (except the boat, which was at the harbour!).
Down at the dock at last, Hiwi and Dad were getting ready.
“Flares?” asked Dad.
“Check,” said Hiwi.
“Life jackets?”
“Check.”
“Measure?”
“Check.”
“Then we’re all set,” said Dad, starting the motor.
“Come on, Hiwi - we don’t have all day!” shouted Dad.
Hiwi stepped onto the boat, and slowly they set off on their fishing adventure.
Out in the middle of the ocean, Hiwi and Dad put bait on the lines and then cast them out into the deep blue sea.
A few moments later, Hiwi had a bite.
“Dad, what happens if I feel a pull?” he asked.
“Quick, Hiwi, pull it up,” shouted Dad, “You’ve caught a fish!”
And, sure enough, Hiwi hauled up the line and on the hook was a snapper.
“Hold it up to the measure,” said Dad excitedly. So Hiwi did, but the snapper’s head didn’t reach the minimum mark, so Hiwi let him go. Although he was sad to see the fish swim away, it was also funny; his first fish, and he never got to eat it!
Dad put his wing around him. “You did the right thing,” he said. “The fish will grow up and have more fish. That means you can change the amount of fish if you really care.”
After that Hiwi caught a mummy fish and a daddy fish, but he let them go to have babies. It was just fun to catch them and let them go.
Tug. “Another bite,” thought Hiwi, and he pulled it up. It was a barracouta - and it jumped off the line and into the boat, flapping around like a mad-fish.
Hiwi and Dad were scared, but they kept their cool, getting some bait and chucking it overboard. The barracouta jumped in after it, but it was too late - there were already punctures in the side of the boat from his teeth. Water was pouring in, and they were sinking fast.
Next thing they were silently bobbing up and down on the calm sea, it was getting dark, and the remains of the boat were on the bottom of the blue sea.
“It’s a good thing we’re wearing lifejackets,” said Dad. “Better pass that yellow container.”
“The one that looks like a milk bottle?” asked Hiwi.
“Yes,” replied Dad.
Hiwi passed it to Dad and he unscrewed the red lid. In it were three bottles: a big yellow one, a small yellow one and a blue one. He unscrewed the lid of the big yellow one, and a big rocket shot out.
At the beach the coastguard saw the rocket and went to his helicopter, hopped in, started the motor and went off to find them.
Meanwhile, Dad unscrewed the lid of the little yellow one and a smaller rocket shot out. The coastguard looked down and saw Hiwi and his dad flapping their little wings. They didn’t get time to use the blue one - they were saved.
The next day, Hiwi asked Dad, “Can we go fishing again?”
