Fishing
Fishing is fishing, regardless of where it takes place.
There can be nothing more exciting than seeing a bunch of fish smashing baits, especially when the predators are yellowfin.
This month’s lead feature comes from Josh Worthington, who got among a hot tuna bite in the Far North last month.
While yellowfin have hardly shown on the local radar for several years, when it does happen it makes it all that much more exciting.
Editor Grant Dixon recently experienced similar action while on a trip with Fiesta Charters out of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. Seeing large schools of yellowfin busting up anchovy bait schools always gets an angler’s heart rate pumping, regardless of the geographical location. Kayakers Stephen Tapp and Herb Spannagl use their hand propelled craft to chase down some of the smaller tuna species out wide, which can be just as exciting on light line from a small craft as tangling with the larger counterparts.
Staying on the offshore theme, noted Kiwi charter skipper Rick Pollock likes nothing more than to go fishing while on holiday. After seeing hundreds of clients each year get among the action, when it is vacation time Rick likes nothing more than being the one pulling in the fish. This issue Rick recalls a memorable ‘busman’s holiday’ with son Kydd in Hawaii.
Tony Orton is another Kiwi skipper who likes to get among the action. Skippering a large gameboat for a Russian owner, Tony gets to fish the world’s hot spots. This month he tells us of hand feeding broadbill in the Mediterranean.
On the subject of destinations, Peter Langlands checks out the sites and angling opportunities Kaikoura has to offer while Craig Worthington gets wrapped up in a kingfish encounter in the Far North.
Adam Clancey continues his series on catching kingfish close to home while Sam Mossman shares some tips and tricks on potting crayfish.
While fishing is great, some of the fun can be in how you get there. Mark Kitteridge highlights some of his more interesting rides in his ‘Need for Speed’ feature.
One thing many of us don’t like to tangle with is sharks. For a spear fisher this is even more important as Darren Shields explains in his ‘Shark City’ feature.
Freshwater anglers have not been forgotten with Silver Flies team member Aaron West sharing his knowledge on reading the water.
As well as the above there is the usual line up of regular columnists giving insightful commentary, tips and hints over a range of subjects and fishing disciplines.
