Kingfish is a species that has long held the respect of any serious Kiwi angler.
While their eating qualities might see them get a C+ grade, they are straight A students in the fighting department.
In this issue kingfish are highlighted in many ways. Kayaker Stephen Tapp does battle with a winning fish from his nimble craft while Adam Clancey, in his third and final article of his yellowtail series, looks at ‘kingfish bling’.
On a recent Kaipara charter connection aboard Ali-Kat when targeting snapper, Mark Kitteridge encounters a nice kingfish that took a liking to his Snapper Snatcher. Where ever or how you target them, kingfish are great fun and currently they are in their prime.
The major event on the calendar this month is the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show in Auckland. This issue contains eight pages of show preview material, outlining the main attractions as well as a great NZ Fishing News subscription offer – one of our best lineups yet.
This issue Sam Mossman takes a look at lures for all seasons in part one of his Artificial Intelligence series while Paul Senior shares his knowledge of targeting snapper over reefs. Mark Kitteridge has an extensive tackle ‘library’ and over the next couple of months highlights his favourite kit in his My Favourite Things series.
Over the last few issues birds as fishfinders have ben highlighted. This month saltfly exponent Craig Worthington puts his spin on the subject.
Spearfisher Darren Shields highlights the tropical visitors to our shores while fly fishers John Murphy and Aaron West check out fishing slow pools and report on the nationals respectively.
See you at the boat show.
