Fishing
Winter fishing opportunities and kahawai are the two themes running through the August issue of NZ Fishing News.
While it is easier to curl up in front of the fire and reads about fishing rather than getting out there and doing it, this time of the year provides some excellent angler opportunities to which this edition will attest.
It is a time in particular when the fly fishers target trophy fish as they head up the rivers to spawn and this is covered by Aaron West in part three of his series on the Tongariro.
Adam Clancey looks at the techniques for winter fishing and how these change between the seasons in his article ‘You Don’t catch fishing In Winter’. Young angler Ben Francis shares some tips and tricks for fishing the harbours such as the Manukau while saltwater flyfisher Craig Worthington checks out a worthy winter adversary – the trevally.
Editor Grant Dixon removed himself from the warmth of his office to head for Great Barrier and some hot winter snapper action while Peter Langlands checks out some of the modern developments in the whitebaiters’ realm.
Kahawai are an extremely important fish to recreational anglers for all sorts of reasons. One aspect is its great fighting ability, especially on light tackle, to which Kevin O’Hanlon attests in this issue.
Currently the Ministry of Fisheries is considering commercial and recreational catch levels and this is discussed in depth, along with a plea for you to have your say in the allocation process.
Both Mark Kitteridge and Sam Mossman look at various aspects of lure fishing from size through to presentation while surfcaster Kane Wrigglesworth recalls a trip north to visit his favourite ‘mudhole’.
Kayaker Herb Spannagl takes a look at ways of working the berley trail while freediver Darren Shields heads to Lake Taupo to deal to the cathfish population.
This month’s Readers Story looks at one family’s successful approach to DIY gamefishing while the Wildfoods recipe appropriately deals with whitebait.
With fathers day around the corner, don’t forget to check out our subscription offer which includes a free gift of a pro-Hunter Prowler slow-jig lure.
