The second Niue Wahoo International Tournament was conducted recently.
The field of competitors was up on last year, with a good number returning from last year's tournament. Numbers of local vaka (canoe) fishermen was also up as the excitement of this annual tournament continues to grow.
Leading the international anglers was Geoff Thomas, the host of the Outdoors with Geoff TV show. However, it would be premature of me to release too many details of the tournament proceedings, as I do not wish to take anything away from Geoff's shows, which will feature much of the action and highlights. I can, however, say that some fantastic fishing was had, with over 95% of all visiting anglers landing at least one - if not several - fish, over the four-day tournament.
Catches included wahoo, yellowfin, dogtooth, skipjack, GTs, barracuda and mahimahi. The largest wahoo for the boat section was taken out by an excellent 36.8kg specimen (one of many caught over 30kg). This was, however, soundly eclipsed by a superb 47.7kg wahoo taken in a vaka by very experienced local fisherman, Mr Atalase Tauati. Mr Tauati caught this beast stray-lining with a whole mackerel bait. A fantastic effort and certainly one of the tournament's highlights.
In general the season has got its second wind and is really firing again, especially in the wahoo department, with some great hauls being brought in daily.
