Over the years I have tried all sorts of covers to protect my kayak fish-finders from salt spray and sun glare.

By far the most successful has been a hood that protrudes on either side and over the top of the display screen.

I recently bought a Lowrance Elite 5, and after mounting it on the deck of my Prowler Ultra 4.3 fishing kayak, I began hunting all over town for a suitable plastic container that I could cut and create a hood from. What I found was either too small or too large, so I drove home feeling quite dejected.

When I pulled into our garage however, I spotted an empty 30 Second outdoor cleaning container I had intended to use as a cray pot buoy on one of the shelves. It was exactly the right size and only needed a bit of warming over the toaster to push out the rounded corners.

I traced the final shape with a felt pen and separated my hood from the rest of the container with a sharp knife. It only needed a bit of trimming for a good fit. The Elite has 3mm nut inserts on each rear corner, allowing me to attach the hood to the display with 3mm screws, spacer nuts and washers. Job done.
