Canterbury Marine Festival – it’s big and free!
Set on the shores of Lake Hood, near Ashburton, in the middle of South Island fishing spots, the Canterbury Marine Festival, October 29-30, 2011, will inspire salmon and trout fishermen throughout the Mainland.

The NZ Marine Industry is organising the festival following the cancellation of the 2011 Christchurch Boat Show due to the earthquake on February 22. The festival will be free to the public and offers a huge display of boats and boating equipment, dished up with plenty of local knowledge. It coincides with the 134th Ashburton A & P Show, October 28-29, creating a great opportunity to take care of farming and boating duties at the same time.

For further information, contact Canterbury Marine Festival manager Tony Smoor on 027 439 9318 or check out the website www.nzmarine.com.

‘Save the Wairau’ up and running

Save The Wairau, an advocacy group to counter TrustPower plans to take 75 percent of the river down a 47km private canal for electricity generation, has vowed to fight the decision.
President Ron Tannock told a 30-strong annual meeting that Save The Wairau would be participating strongly in any decisions to be made as to requirements of consents given to TrustPower and related conditions.

Ad Feedback

“Our mission is clear: we are dedicated to the long-term sustainability of the Wairau River,” he said.
The president stated the decision giving the go-ahead to TrustPower was littered with “poor decision making and errors in law”. He expressed a lack of confidence in the judicial system being neutral and thorough.
“However, there are other ways within the law and the incoming committee will address those,” he said.
TrustPower’s claim of being a triple bottom-line company (i.e. satisfying shareholders, serving the community and protecting the environment) was only tokenism and “pure advertising puffery”, said Ron Tannock.
Officers elected were: President, Ron Tannock; Vice President, Carey Cudby; and Secretary, Phyllis Collins.

Correction
In a recent Southern Currents column it was stated the Christchurch Take a Kid Fishing event, held at the Groynes Picnic Grounds, was run by Fish & Game.

It is in fact organised by the Kids Fishing Charitable Trust. This event has been run for 23 years, and while Fish & Game is an important part of the hosting team, it is supported by up to 100 volunteers from local fishing clubs, Lions and many groups and individuals, who all do a wonderful job and deserve to be acknowledged. In the past the event has catered for up to 7,000 kids on the day.
