Rudd are an attractive fish of slow moving rivers and lakes.

Growing to around 35cm, they are commonly much smaller and often stunted in small ponds and lakes.

A popular fish with coarse anglers, rudd are widely distributed through both main islands and especially common in the Waikato and Auckland regions. Appearance is unmistakable: rudd are deep-bodied fish, red-gold in colour becoming darker on the back.

Small upturned mouths indicate that they spend much of their time feeding near the surface. Easily taken on light line using float rigs and baits of corn kernels or bread paste.
